The icy fingers of the economic downturn...

1. The schedule for the conference in Wales has been posted a few places online, so I'm properly googleable. It's making me go :D a lot.

Which is good*, because...
*I don't google myself regularly; I'd googled the guy who's on the panel with me, and for half a second was shocked to see my own name come up in that preview text thing.

2. The airline I was going to take after the conference, to visit [livejournal.com profile] wicked_g in Denmark, was owned by an Icelandic company. Iceland is bankrupt, and the airline is bankrupt too. Visa wants me to send them proof that Sterling's over before they'll do anything. Excuse me? It's international news. Blogs in Taiwan picked it up, surely an international credit card company would have heard something.

Luckily I bought the super-special insurance from Air Transat (my way to and from the UK), so there's a chance I'll be able to get back to Canada sooner after the conference and not have to live for a week in Gatwick.

3. I have this assignment due Friday, but because of #2 (and some other crap) I'm just going to play Lego Batman for DS (THANK YOU [livejournal.com profile] philthe25th!) and watch QI. SO THERE, ECONOMIC DOWNTURN AND GRAD SCHOOL. SO THERE.

Ok, I know I already replied, but yeah-the title kinda makes me laugh. Cause, you know, Iceland...icy fingers...hee?

Oh, and just direct Visa to the Sterling website. There's a whole explanation and stuff going on.

My reflex in a crisis is to make bad puns. Hoorah!

I tried to tell Visa it was on the website, and the woman kept repeating that either I or the airline needs to "send the information" to Visa, with no explanation about what that information is or how to get it to them. Sheesh. I'm going to try again now.

If you don't google yourself regularly, maybe you're just doing it wrong.

The same thing happened with me and Jetsgo. WHY DO WE LOVE YOU, LOW-COST CARRIERS, WHEN YOU ONLY CAUSE US PAIN?!

Every Sunday, after the war film.

Air Transat still seems to be solvent, so I'll be able to get to the conference. It's the having-to-live-in-Gatwick-for-a-week and not-going-to-Denmark that blows such enthusiastic chunks.

You are a UK pop star, according to my google-fu with your name. *facepalm*

[identity profile] naturelf.livejournal.com 2008-11-03 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, that's what I get for having a moderately common last name. Quick google-fu shows about 600 of them in the 1790 US census and (*clickety*) 90,000 by the 1920s.

*pokes more* But there are only ever half as many Joneses as there are Smiths. Keeping up with the Joneses, HA.

Bah, I can't find a link to that meme thing where you put in your name and it spits out all the random fragments from across google where it's YOUR NAME is [whatever sentence]. Google-fu fail.
