What do you think about netbooks? Useful, wasteful, the perfect size for a little on-the-go computing or too damn small to be worth anything?

Grabbing a cute little computer so soon after getting my desktop resurrected seems to exceed my undefined budget for how many computers I can buy in any given 6-week span, but those little netbooks just seem... useful.

Or is this just a fad that I shouldn't waste money on?

See, my laptop is entering the "lots of issues" phase of its life. I've had it just over two years (and it was an older - deeply discounted - model when I got it).

The battery needs replacing in the biggest way (45 min life! yay!) the power cord likes wiggling itself loose, forcing me to (unwittingly) use battery power even when the damn thing is plugged in, the lamp on the screen likes to flicker and so far none of the keys have fallen off yet (though the O is close).

It's just a bit too heavy to be properly portable, but the keyboard is a good size to type on (which is probably why it's also too heavy to carry around everywhere).

But how many computers does a girl need? I already have two. Sure, one's a frankensteined desktop and the other's a moderately-functioning but non-portable laptop. I think I'd take a netbook with me to the library to do work on it (rather than handwriting notes) because the only reason I don't lug my laptop everywhere is because, well, lugging ain't easy. And I have to take my computer places because I'm unable to get any work done at home (my desk is in my room and my room is my watching-tv space, not my being-productive space; this is a problem).

It's also useless for mobile video-watching or song-listening because the headphone jack works whenever it wants to, not whenever I'd like it to. The audio card is iffy and sometimes uninstalls itself if the wind blows from the south or a two-headed chicken is born somewhere in the world (or I assume so: there has to be a reason for it).

The netbooks do seem too small (physically) to take much use/abuse, but I don't have one, so I don't know if that's true or not. (But if I get one I'd have an excuse to buy one of those foldy flexible keyboards that I'd spend about three weeks with just holding it up and wiggling it. Srsly: who needs video games if the peripherals are so fun?)

I think I may have an extra month's rent kicking around that'll mean it's not a supreme effort to drag a computer with me. I think. Or maybe I'm going to retail-therapy away my summer bursary.

Thoughts? Observations? Opinions? If you have a netbook, how do you use it? Do you like it? Should I be scared of buying anything from Acer again (my current laptop is Acer) or would HP do me fine (my workhorse of a desktop was HP and lasted 7ish years)?

*goes back to schoolwork, no really*

EDIT: I asked Hunch.com if I should get one and it said 78% yes (I should).
