That's right, it's time for another... Music Post.
This time around, I'll be sharing some of the stranger songs I've run across.
Zipped up tight.
The Birthday Party - Mutiny in Heaven
♥ The Birthday Party was the band Nick Cave sang with back in the late 70s and early 80s. Check out their website for some ADORABLE pictures of Nick & company from 25 years ago. It's cute to see that they went quite quickly from the "We're so punk rock that we don't need shirts on" (ca 1979) to wearing suits on stage (ca 1982). Screw the Sex Pistols, it's all about Australian punk rock! So what if the band moved en masse to London in 1980, they're still Australian. :)
Tom Waits - What's He Building?
This spoken-word piece is a creepy, atmospheric track. It's off of Mule Variations, my fave Tom Waits album.
Iggy Pop - In the Deathcar
Another strange spoken-word bit. I know nothing about it. I downloaded it in a pile of Iggy Pop stuff and now I pass it along to you. It reminds me of the "grace" that his character says in Dead Man.
Fettes Brot - The Grosser
It's a cover of Steve Miller Band's "The Joker", but with a horn section and organ... and in German. "Ich bin grosser!" It's more fun than the original, which I've always heard as an excuse or attempt to justify or absolve the "I" in the song. The Fettes Brot version has the feeling more of that Afroman single that was so big back in 2002-ish (?) but as done by a hip-hop group that's fooling around with ska instrumentation. It works really well.
David Bowie - Segue: Ramona A Stone/I Am With Name
In the 90s, Bowie tried to revamp his image yet again and (with 1. Outside) decided to try out industrial music. His previous album, Black Tie White Noise was more on the adult-contemporary side of things, and his next, Earthling, is where he really hit it with tracks like "Little Wonder", "Seven Years in Tibet", "I'm Afraid of Americans" and "Dead Man Walking". (Ignore the next, hours... and head straight to the WONDERFUL Heathen and Reality... seriously: go buy Heathen right now. You'll love it.) But we're talking about 1. Outside, here, where he was going completely experimental and bizarre. This is one of the stranger tracks, which isn't a song so much as a bunch of musical ideas.
And, as a special bonus, I'll slide along a pile of mp3s that I found on various indie music blogs' best-of-2005 lists. I'm no savant, but I do know where some hide. Enjoy! :D Again, zip file of love.(Which will be put up presently, when ysi gets a move on... stay tuned.) It's up!
Included:
Cage - Shoot Frank (featuring Darryl Palumbo)
Caribou - Pelican Narrows <-- so good!
Cassettes Won't Listen - Lunch for Breakfast
Final Fantasy - The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead
Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch
Rilo Kiley - A Town Called Luckey
The Cloud Room - Hey Now Now
White Stripes - Denial Twist
Young and Sexy - Oh My Love
Young and Sexy - Television
While I'm at it, here's the .torrent files for three seasons of A Bit of Fry and Laurie. I'm currently seeding some of it. It's ZOMG Fantastic (tm). Incredibly funny stuff. I'm in love with both of them.
EDIT: It seems that the screenplay rewrite isn't due until February 9! That's instead of Thursday or whenever it was due. Joy joy joy, oh joy.

Date: 2006-01-10 08:56 pm (UTC)And - I got your email, and I'll provide a detailed explanation of what's what, just as soon as I get some sleep. The (late) class ran over, and then there was another hour before I got home. Best I can do right now involves flailing and mumbles, which doesn't translate well in text. :| Stay tuned.
