Feb. 13th, 2006 01:09 pmI'm still in Belleville. The driver test plan has moved to Backup Plan, and I've got a standby slot-thing waiting for me at 3. The lady was really nice, but the fact remains that I'm still in Belleville.
I moaned a while back about how I can't ever watch a movie or TV that comes out of North America or England without recognizing at least one of the supporting players. Simon Pegg showed up on Black Books, Pancho Villa had Giles (a bitchy, foul-mouthed Giles, at that...) killed in And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself (Colm Feore and Jim Broadbent also showed up) and one of Buffy's friends from the movie was in Cool World, too.
The lesson here is probably to watch less TV. But when your little brother is lonely and starved for Farscape all you can do is drive the three hours to visit with a stack of shiny discs and watch stuff 'til your eyes fall out. We managed to watch three films (And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself, Cool World and sex, lies and videotape), twelve episodes of Farscape, the first two of the Hitchhiker's Guide BBC miniseries, one episode of SG1, one of Black Books and the entire second and third series of A Bit of Fry and Laurie. I don't even know how many hours that it. There's not a lot to do in Belleville, y'see. Plus, the poor kid doesn't even have a computer.
As it is, my brain is fried, I've had no sleep, and I've got to go convince the Ministry of Transportation that I should be allowed to have a real driver's licence. I've been eligible to move beyond the learner's permit since, like, the fall of 2003. It's about time I get this over with.
But all I have left to do on the two Harry Potter scarves is to put the fringe on. The ends are all woven in, they look pretty, the minor oopses are fixed and though
thucyken might want to block hers, the many hours of work are over and I can start on
aoshi's scarf. That's one Slytherin (me), one Ravenclaw (
thucyken) and one Hufflepuff (
aoshi). All we need's a brave and noble hero-type who likes people wants to save the world and the quartet is complete! [/geek]
EDIT: We watched My Best Friend is a Vampire, too. Oops.

Date: 2006-02-14 03:42 pm (UTC)There's always the wizards-on-the-spaceship idea, but it would have to be really good to not be cheesy. Or the various wizarding academies could continue to exist, and they could have figured a way for owls to fly through the vacuum of space, I'm sure.
Then there's the question of who will be there. I'm coming at this from a Serenity-folks-in-Potterverse angle, and the kids don't need to be there at all. But I do like the idea of prim, bookish Hermione getting dating tips from our dear Kaylee. :)
Okay. Yes. I have some ideas. This'll be perfect for avoiding schoolwork. Bwaha.
Thanks for that

Date: 2006-02-16 09:13 pm (UTC)Mal and Zoe left Hogwarts at Christmas to join the final year of the fight against You-Know-Who. Things were looking desperate until the Halloween when Voldemort was defeated. Mal's mother's farm had been the site of one of the most brutal battles of the war; when he tried to return home, all he found was irradiated ground that would take years to heal, no sign of the herds, the buildings, or of his mother. With no money or prospects, he accepted the help of Mundungus, who set him up with a small cargo transportation business. Mal loved it - he got to go all over the world, see the sights, and if some of his transportation was slightly outside the Ministry's perview, well, Zoe was a quick hand with her wand, and both knew something from the days of the war about hiding, sneaking and surviving.
Zoe surprised most everyone by marrying Wash (who was the Hufflepuff seeker for the year that house won the Quidditch cup) a few years later. Wash was the best on a broomstick of all of them, and got them out of more than one scrape with his fancy flying. Wash was the one who recommended Mal hire on Kaylee, a Hufflepuff who'd been a few years behind them in school, and who was a good one with charms and such, which were downright handy when an oft-used portkey went gitchy just before a big job. Jayne came to work for Mal after Mal'd made him a better offer; 3% more from a job, and no associating with trolls, neither.
Things were going smoothly for the motley bunch of bandits (and Mal was getting along real well with that Ravenclaw friend of Kaylee's there, the pretty dark-haired one who worked for the Department of International Magical Cooperation and who was always coming and going from India and the like), when they started hearing whispers about You-Know-Who's return. Mal'd hoped that they were just rumours, but one day they'd let this slick young man (Kaylee was the one to recognize him, a Slytherin from her year who'd gone off to study healing) ride with them out from Berlin. He was a paying customer, no matter who (or what) his parents were, and they'd been scrupulously model citizens after the defeat of Voldemort, but that didn't mean that Mal or his people had to like the young man. Not that he was trouble, as Simon just sat next to that strange crate in the back of Mal's rickety old *ahem* reliable cargo van (magically modified to have an astonishing capacity).
When they reached Hamburg (heading to London, of course, and planning to fly their van across the Channel and possibly forgetting that pesky customs stop in Dover), Mal started wondering why the young man had such an intent on that box. Most passengers preferred to stay in the passenger lounge up front (a really rather astonishing capacity, that van).
After the box was opened, and Kaylee made tea for everyone, who'd calmed down and made some amends for things said in the heat of the moment, Simon told his story. His little sister hadn't been at Hogwarts. She'd been sent off to a school they'd none of them heard of, recommended by friends of Simon's parents. A school run by former Death Eaters who'd been preparing for their Dark Lord's return...
...something like that. Problem is, I'm not sure how to make it into a plot and not whatever that just was. :)
('Course, it would be really cool to flip this, make it dark!fic and have the Death Eaters/Alliance win...)

Date: 2006-02-19 05:27 pm (UTC)First question - the bid for power Voldemort is making, is this the bid he made before James and Lily's deaths, or the bid he is making now (i.e. book six of HP)?
Mal'd hoped that they were just rumours, but one day they'd let this slick young man (Kaylee was the one to recognize him, a Slytherin from her year who'd gone off to study healing) ride with them out from Berlin.
A Slytherin, eh? I always saw Simon as a Ravenclaw (yup, I've sorted the crew too!) with many friends in Slytherin.
(a really rather astonishing capacity, that van).
I want a van like that!
('Course, it would be really cool to flip this, make it dark!fic and have the Death Eaters/Alliance win...)
I'm a huge fan of dark!fic. Also, it would add many, many conflicts to the whole thing, because not only did Mal and Zoe fight against Voldemort, but they are also smugglers, and have twice as many reasons to not want to be caught.
Book could always be a former advisor of Voldemort's who mysteriously disappeared from Voldemort's side one day, and reappeared in Berlin with a new life that nobody in Mal's crew knew about.

Date: 2006-02-19 06:48 pm (UTC)I was thinking the first time, because that's the one that we have the most information about. The current one is still coming to a head; the opening gambits are made, the lines are drawn, but it hasn't played itself out yet. Plus, having it at the earlier one would have the crew at the right ages if we needed to talk about that Potter kid. They might know the Marauders from school, by reputation, but they have their own lives, their own friends, their own stories.
A Slytherin, eh? I always saw Simon as a Ravenclaw (yup, I've sorted the crew too!) with many friends in Slytherin.
Where did you sort everyone? My Simon's a Slytherin for a few reasons. He has a very strong sense of family duty: he became a doctor because his father expected him to, and he probably was raised knowing that he would be a Slytherin, just like the rest of the Most Noble and Ancient House of Tam. We don't know much about the families on the Core planets, but to be part of the wealthy elite, to be from a world so concerned with status and appearing proper, just screams Slytherin. Granted, that world is more corrupt and stained than the folks on the Rim, but Simon seemed to buy it all. More than anything, he comes across as sheltered (that whole thing with the dedicated source box... he probably just stuck to the academic stuff because he's all driven and stuff and that's why I love my Simon and I wish there was any Simon fic that didn't involve slash or crazy space incest *grumbles*).
Also, I get that he saved his sister not because it was Noble and Good, but because she's his sister. Not that Ron would do any less than that for Ginny (oh god, more plot bunnies!), but Simon doesn't need any other reason to protect his own from harm, build walls to keep her save, and try to fix her when she may not be broken. He's also very cold when we first meet him; very detatched, reserved, of the Old Order and not at all comfortable or willing to fit in. He's a bumbling fool with Kaylee because he's bad with people who don't fit his codes.
I think I was working from the idea that there'd be more Slytherins on the core, and as a scion of a typical Slytherin family (who trust in the Alliance, who are obsessed with image), Simon would have grown up with those principles only to have them destroyed as a young man. I can totally see him as a Ravenclaw (or even Gryffindor), but I like his arc better if he's shedding his Slytherin skin piece by piece. It's his role on the show to be a representative of the evil empire, it could work in the Potterverse, as well.
I'm a huge fan of dark!fic.
Me too! I just can't *write* it. I don't think. I tried going dark for screenwriting, but it ended up puppies and sunrises. *shame*

Date: 2006-02-20 08:46 pm (UTC)Ravenclaw - Simon, Inara, Book
Slytherin - Jayne
Hufflepuff - Kaylee
Gryffindor - Mal, Wash, Zoe
The only one I wasn't sure about was River. Sometimes, I think she'd be a Gryffindor; other times, I think she's more of a Ravenclaw. Sometimes, I think of sorting her into Slytherin.
My Simon's a Slytherin for a few reasons.
Now that you say that, I can definitely see why he'd be a Slytherin. I think it is kinda cool too and now I want to write Slytherin!Simon with you :)
that's why I love my Simon and I wish there was any Simon fic that didn't involve slash or crazy space incest
seems to be lots of Simon/Mal slash out there... which makes me sad sometimes. There's this fluffy Simon/Kaylee (http://community.livejournal.com/ff_fanfic/214134.html) Christmas fic that I think is sweet, though. I would love to find Simon fic that goes into his character, his past, and why he is the way he is.
Also, I get that he saved his sister not because it was Noble and Good, but because she's his sister. Not that Ron would do any less than that for Ginny (oh god, more plot bunnies!)
Care to share them?

I can do dark!fic - its fun and I'm all about the angst and violence and torture. I haven't tried my hand at Firefly dark!fic yet, but I have done it for Angel and Buffy.
There's this one HP dark!fic that I absolutely love with Bellatrix and Regulus: Poppy's Bonfire Spread (http://community.livejournal.com/darkones/82229.html) by

Date: 2006-02-21 08:49 pm (UTC)Yay! He'd be a good Ravenclaw, but so would Hermione. Then again, there's no saying we can't do one of those "5 Ways" ones with a Simon in each house. *kills plot bunnies*
Care to share them?
Ron saves Ginny from the clutches of Lord Voldy and she's crazy now? God, I'd love to see what happens when post-Serenity un!crazy River goes up against a Dementor.

Ah, the Darkfic Collective! I've poked through there once or twice. Darkness is delicious, isn't it?
