Background: I took my fourth HP scarf commission today, and I do like making these things. [livejournal.com profile] aoshi and [livejournal.com profile] thucyken both mentioned that if I had fannish things to sell, I could add my small pile to the AN table and take a turn manning the thing. (I'd take a turn manning it whatever the case, I wouldn't mind and I'm good with numbers, etc...) If I adapt the HP scarf pattern, I can make a pile of house scarves and sell them at a nice little profit. It'll be my own pattern, which will make it okay to sell them, I think.

Question 1: Is this a good idea? (Would people buy HP house scarves at an anime convention? Would other people be selling HP house scarves?)

Question 2: If it is a good idea, how many scarves should I make? Two of each? Four of each? It's not a problem of having them done in time, it's a question of still having 16 scarves that I won't know what to do with at the end of the three days. Are there more Ravenclaws than Hufflepuffs?

Voices of reason and experience, I appeal to you! Advice, stories, feedback, anecdotes are more than welcome. I'm completely lost in this. :)

1. I think people would definitely be interested in Harry Potter house scarves, even though it is an anime convention.

2. You should probably have the most of Gryffindor and/or Slytherin, since those seem to be popular. Maybe three of Ravenclaw, two of Hufflepuff, four of Gryffindor, four of Slytherin?

I know I'm going to be selling cat and devil hats at the con, but I'm not sure what else, if anything, I'm going to sell.

Cool, cool. HP is universal. :)

Any feel on who else might be selling costume bits or knitted things? I haven't been to AN before, and I don't really know the range of vendors.

That's kind of what I thought, more of the Gryffindor/Slytherin and less of the rest. Hmmm... [thinking as I'm typing] I'm going to be using the mega-balls of Red Heart to make the scarves, and I'll probably get two scarves from each ball. I might do 4 each of G, S and R, and two of H. Or I'll wait until I actually start making them and see how much yarn each takes and fret later. :)

How are you deciding how many hats to make? (Oh - and if possible, could I change my order from red ears to black ears? If you've already made it, no sweat, but I think I'd prefer to go all-black, if that's at all possible.)

I don't recall anyone selling knitted stuff last year at AN. I just remember art, art, buttons, and more art in artists' alley.

And I haven't done the ears on your hat yet, so it'll be super easy to make your cat hat all black!

I plan on making as many hats as I can stand before the convention, and taking up to 5 commissions (if necessary).

Great, that's reassuring. Hobby yeilding profit? Egads!

I realized that I only have the one red scarf, and the red ears and the Slytherin scarf would really clash... I'm sorry that I left it so late to ask you to change. But it's okay! Woo! *happy dance*

This is going to be cool. :D

It is! And no worries about waiting to ask for the change - it would have been a snap to change even if the ears were done.

I suppose I'm used to sewing, when every change is a major production. I forget that knitting comes in little loops. Heh.

...grabbing a Slytherin!

Are you sure the Slytherin is okay with that? Some places, that could get you slapped! :P [/over-literal mode]

Hmm...my advice, aside from that you never know particularly what amount of stuff you'll sell (I've had some cons where I sell all sorts of art and some that are like bone dry and I hardly get any prints off my table), is that more people like Ravenclaw than you'd think, because a lot of people don't want to go with the 'popular' houses because they're too overdone, etc., etc. I know a looooot of friend with that mentality.

That being said, I say totally go for it! On that topic, I need to remember to keep checking for when table slots go up...guh.

Sounds about right. This newest commission was for a Ravenclaw scarf.

If you don't mind having me around, that is. :) I'm cool to sit at the table most of the day (I used to work renfests, I'm used to it) and let everyone else run around. Plus, I took bookkeeping in college, so I'm good with numbers.

Of course I don't, at least! I'm starting to think we might want a bigger table though XD But that's definitely cool with me ^^

Hmmm... what size table were you looking at? I'll only need about 10" on the end for my little pile. :)

I was just going to get one, but now I'm thinking that maybe I should get 1 and a half because there are so many of us now ^^; I'll have to see when all the sizes and prices and stuff come out though.

they'd totally sell. HP and anime seem to cross fandoms a lot. I think Gryffindor and Slytherin would be the hotter item. Maybe 4 of those two and 2 of the other houses?

Yay! I'm feeling better about this; everyone seems to think it's a Good Idea too. I think that all I have to decide on his how many Ravenclaws to make up.

Besides, if they don't sell, I'm making huge puppy dog eyes at all of you to make you buy a leftover. :P

Probably $15 CDN (for a scarf 10" wide and 8' long). $20 if they turn out to be frelling impossible to make. Not sure how much I'd charge for shipping. :)
