charloween30 Seconds to Mars was several kinds of fun, even if I did end up going by myself. Yes, there's the fun of a shared Experience, but there's also a curious serenity when you strike out on your own and know that you are there alone in a crowd of people.
That, and you can dance like a mofo and know that no one knows you. I have bruises. My new shirt held up well.
And I met Jared Leto & fangirled on him (just a little). I have no camera, therefore no pics. Feel free to draw one of your own. I was all "zomg fantastic show, great energy, woot" he was all *eyes* & "hey you have really nice hair" and I was all *holy fuck his eyes are freaking awesome* & *run*. And I didn't mention My So-Called Life. Nor did I ask why, in Alexander didn't we get to see Hephaistion kiss Alexander (just a little!), and how cheap was Hephaistion's death scene, seeing as that character was the one marginally interesting thing in that train-wreck of a film.
And then I hung out with one of the opening acts because they were tons of fun, from LA and not a punk band.
The best part of the show was the spectacle: when the frontman is a performer, there's a whole other feel to the show than with a singer-songwriter. For one, there's all kinds of epic going on, with flashy fascist trappings and flags, and playing an entire Radiohead album before they came on... Mainly, he knows how to work a crowd. He was really engaged, and had us engaged, and kept hopping into the crowd. For the girls he pulled cute faces and gave out roses, for the guys he encouraged "those crazy motherfuckers" to keep slamming around.
Plus, kid has a set of pipes on him. And he played "Capricorn" as a slower song with just the guitar and... guh. If I was in high school, I'd be so in love with this band.
Besides, slightly silly lyrics when screamed by a crowd become something more. Teen angst, transmogrified. 30 Seonds to Mars shares a quality with bands like Sonata Arctica (I say them because I've been listening to their cover of "Wind Beneath My Wings" too much); a quality where *they* believe in what they're singing, and (no matter how trite on paper) those lyrics are belted out with such conviction that all is forgiven.
Jared Leto's actually quite freaky-looking when he wants to be. From a certain angle an in a certain light (sorry, Nick Cave) the effect is like a crazed demon monkey looking out from behind his face. Scary, but also strangely appealing.
In sum: good times, good times. Plus, he sang a little bit of "Closer" in a moment which was truly ovary-exploding. :D
