charloween: (Having a bad day...)

Torontonians: if you've got a chance tomorrow, take the subway westbound from Yonge station. They've got Bay closed off for construction so they're routing everything through Museum (of all places!). They're using the lower track to get you there, which means you go through Lower Bay station. Yes, the fabled and mysterious Lower Bay! They don't stop there, but they have turned all the lights on so you can see everything. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, look it up on wikipedia: "lower bay toronto" should do you for a search string.) Actually, for the early morning trains (like the one I was on) they slowed right down to let everyone take a look at this lost subway stop. (And Karen? If you're reading this, by purest coincidence my playlist threw up Tea Party. Not the right song, but still. Close enough.)

It's been a geeky wish of mine to see this place for years, and now that I have... it wasn't what I was expecting. Seeing it from the train was so very surreal, because it's painted almost like the Bay they still use, and it's the same distance from Yonge, which means the feeling you get from looking out isn't so much "hey, there's something new", but "hey, there's something that should be one way but isn't and eeergh it's strange". It looks like someone went all 28 Days Later on the real Bay station. Passing it so slowly from the (familiar) subway car, looking out at the (familiar-yet-wrong) subway station meant I couldn't look at it on my return trip. It was just too bizarre. Unsettling. It was just too cinematically and narratively perfect, looking out the window (movie screen) at the re-dressed subway station. The entire thing was compounded by the fact that no one really uses Bay much anyway, it's the lost little brother station between two major places where you change lines. Yonge is less confusing and the entrances to Bay and Yonge are, like, just across the street from each other anyway.

I'm not making any sense. It was like seeing your best friend or your mother dressed in the wrong clothes, but through a window, with the glass between you and her insulating you from the slight but unmistakable wrongness of the image. It wasn't real, but it was; it couldn't be and really it wasn't - because the real Bay station is alive and well, just one level up.

But, Torontonians: Lower Bay station is something you'll only see if you're breaking in or tagging along on a shoot (if you're lucky enough to find one to let you tag along on). Now I've only got to find a way to find that station underneath Queen and I'll be one lost station closer to a full set.

**

In other news: I wrenched my knee something funky and it's hurting again; [livejournal.com profile] _shewalks, I'm sorry that movie was so bad; and I need to sleep for a month. There's nothing I need to do in March, is there? No? Good. *snores*

It is on wiki, but I had to search Lower Bay (TTC) to find it. I never knew about these lost stations!!! I is a bad toronto gal. *shakes head*

I especially love that they have a set there all ready to go to make it into a New York subway station whenever. Toronto WINS.

Hee! I only found out about the lost stations in high school because The Tea Party filmed a music video there.

The crazy part is that I've seen films done on that platform, but then they want to show the character leaving the system so they show them surfacing at Yonge... but you can totally see the HBC logo in the background. *shakes head* Or when they film at Union and are all "hey, it's Chicago" and forget to cover the GO Train signs.

Yeah, the only problem? No camera. I found some from the google image search (http://www.cygnals.com/zine/complete/subway/bay01.jpg), but they're from the platform and really don't capture the same feeling as going through on the train.

I've got to go to St. Clair West via Yonge tomorrow, so it looks like I don't really have a choice. I never knew our cities' transit system had so much dirty laundry.

Nice (ironic!) choice of music.

Wow. Plan yourself in an extra 15 minutes at least, because there are three different trains running from the northbound platform of Museum (where you'll have to change trains). Let me know how the trip goes!

Thank the gods this is only for the next few weekends, not during the weekdays. That would be madness.

As for the music... it's great what a random playlist of thousands of songs (nearly 6500 at last check) will toss up.

Eh - I've seen worse movies, so it wasn't that bad. Besides, I got to spend time with you and eat delicious hot and sour soup!

Speaking of eating, I'm going to be in the area again on Tuesday evening to see Bright Eyes :D

Yeah, but it's too bad this one fell squarely in "mediocre" without being able to make it over to "so bad it's good".

Bright Eyes is at The Opera House, aren't they... *ponders* Meetcha at the Pizza Pizza on Queen-tsa?

It's west of the Opera House, on the other side of Broadview and a block west from Jilly's. I can't probably get there sooner than 6:45/7, because class is until 5:30. Yey! Pizza!

I have no idea when I'm going to get there - it all depends on traffic and such. I can message you when I get closer - maybe when I'm a half hour away or something?

Sure, that sounds fine. It takes about 5-10 mins for me to walk down there, so half an hour gives me plenty of notice. WOo!

Heyy I might be able to get a couple of snaps next week. But i was going through on Queen today, and we got to go through the canivorous queen routing area...without a flashlight, you'll probably fall to your doom.

Hehhe was there any dead politician bodies at Old Bay?

Pictures would be awesome! And I'd of course bring a flashlight... I saw a picture on one of those urban explorer sites of the Queen subterranean streetcar thing, and it looked pretty unspectacular. That doesn't mean I don't want to see it...

No dead politicians, but plenty of boarded-up bits what heaven knows what stuck inside...
