5x08, "The Hungry Earth"
Oh, a nice jolly opening. I'm sure no one is going to die before this teaser is over.
Also, if they're drilling farther than anyone has before I'm sure that there's going to be a) something bad, and b) some speech about how great it is that humans would drill because it's there. (Or maybe I'm still in Ten mode? I'm certainly far more snarky than I was expecting.)
Oop! And there goes nice!dad. Good knowing you, nice!dad.
...Eleven: "Humans! You're so nostalgic." *facepalm* I'm so sure future-them are just there to wave hello. (It's South Wales, after all.)
OOh, nice match cut from the hole in the ground to the base of the TARDIS.
I quite like that Amy introduces herself and the Doctor. Normally it doesn't go that way. Way to not be passive, Amy!
One wonders if the audition process for being on this show is basically: "Scream in terror. Keep screaming. Now look sad that you're being eaten by a monster. ...Okay, you're hired." Way to be eaten by the ground, Amy.
Oh, Doctor: "Excuse me, I am making perfect sense: you're just not keeping up." HA. ♥
"...is the Doctor."
"Him?!"
*pops up from behind the case* "Me!" *grins*
Wonderful - another story that takes place sorta at night. Good way to shoot around a cloudy day?
Rory should know better than to diss the sonic, sure, but the best companions should always keep the Doctor defencive.
I love it when this Doctor says he doesn't know something.
This day-for-night lighting works for Matt Smith. Just saying.
Oh, Amy. ♥ How is it that every companion is infinitely more awesome than the previous one?
Oh, c'mon. The Doctor so doesn't hate to monologue. Aaaaand there it is, the "humans are awesome" speech.
Hahaha "Nobody dies today". I really don't think so.
5x09, "Cold Blood"
Amy continues to be awesome. Of course you pick the lizard-man's pocket, Amy.
Rory trusts the Doctor with his life? When did that happen? Since when does Rory think of the Doctor with anything but suspicion?
And the military commander lizard-lady is a one-dimensional angry person. Rar, she is lizard, hear her roar. That's pretty lazy writing. These creatures aren't that interesting.
Oh, the lizards are doing something to the Doctor that are making him go blurry. I wonder if it's a blur effect for our benefit, or if they're actually making him go blurry with the machine thing. It really is all about the pain acting, isn't it? And a bit more lazy writing here with the, "Augh! Stoppit!" "Why?" "Augh! Not human!" "...Okay?" method of convincing the lizard-man scientist to stop the scan. (And wouldn't removing bacteria from any of the humans thus introduce a fatal strain to the underground population? WTF decontamination if it's only there for a little meaningless torture-porn? I demand that by the end of the episode there's payoff to the meaningless torture-porn.)
...I want Amy to steal the uniform of that lizard-lady.
Rory ♥ Of course, he's actually got useful skills and stuff.
"What, because I got sucked into the ground? You're so clingy." ♥ Amy must be so fun to write for.
HAH! Lizard-man official is wearing academic robes. Tee hee hee. Oh, and he's bitchy! "Go and play soldiers", indeed!
I like Meera Nyal, and I'm glad to see her being awesome here.
Too bad the episode's aliens are kind of boring.
Uh, lizard-official? Those soldiers aren't "foolish enough" to follow that lizard-commander. They were brought out of cryo and told to fight, that's not really the same as being a volunteer force.
That's the third time someone's been "just behind". This isn't going to go well.
And there's the payoff to the torture-porn from before: an excuse for two characters to have to remain behind. Boo hoo. I don't care.
Excuse me, Doctor? Why not put your hand in the crack in space and time? MAYBE because the last time you saw it, it was making people erase? I guess I haven't been paying attention to the arc, because this makes no sense.
RORY! No! Not fair. :(
...though I suppose she'll be okay with it because soon he'll never have been born? Oh, Amy's right on the same page, with her understanding the implications of this. Good, show. I like a clever companion. I suppose companions aren't exactly finite resources, though, and the Doctor can always find more to throw at whatever abyss-of-the-season he's railing against. (I'm not to cut up about this 'cause I was spoiled for it. So... *shrug* The OH HEY JUST AMY ON THE HILL at the end was a bit over-done, though.)
5x10, "Vincent and the Doctor"
So, at one point in my thesis-that-isn't-entirely-about-DW I talk a bit about Van Gogh. Well, about "Wheat Field with Crows".
The Doctor isn't at all acting suspicious. Good on Amy for calling him on it, but I think this warrants further explanation. Which isn't forthcoming, and she doesn't ask any more questions.
Oh, I'm going to spend this entire episode pointing at the sets and laughing, eh?
Ooh, accent jokes! I love accent jokes. Holland = Scotland, ftw. Clever.
Hee, it is a very starry, starry night. I love the episodes when the Doctor turns into a fanboy. There's something deliciously charming about it.
Hah, the Doctor refuses a cup of coffee, and probably good news on that. I couldn't imagine him with coffee in him. HA! Van Gogh is a bit manic, yeah? (And the way Smith plays this, so perfectly - like he's trying to hear the colours, too.)
...uh, Doctor? Your godmother with two heads and bad breath (twice) gave you the Google Goggles app. And also now it's daylight. How long were they up drinking?
SUNFLOWERS!
"Is this how time normally passes? Really... slowly." ♥!
Hee, the Doctor is armed with overconfidence! ♥! ♥!
Vincent, I love Amy too.
I like this episode a lot more than the previous two. There's humour ("I think he liked that one." "Oh.") and snark and lots of running around and historical fanboying. There aren't useless aliens and forced WE SHOULD LEARN TO LIVE TOGETHER hand-wringing.
And Van Gogh can see what the crack in time tried to take away. Oh, heartbreaking.
And oh, Doctor. He called Van Gogh "Rory".
Hold up, show. This taking-the-artist-to-the-museum is totally awesome and kind and sweet, but it's also kind of terribly cruel. I mean, it's a bit sadistic and weird. I think I see what they were going for but I can't say I'm totally a fan. A pat on the back and being told he's
the greatest dude to ever pick up a paint brush isn't exactly a cure for whatever caused Van Gogh to kill himself.
5x11, "The Lodger"
Will this one be like the Hitchcock film, where the homeowners are convinced their upstairs lodger is off killing people and there's mass hysteria? And triangles? When I watch the episode, I'm sure I'll find out. I'll get there. Soon.
And! The new episode of Sherlock is downloading, but very slowly. :(
If I wanted, I'm pretty sure I could find a download/stream of the movie where Benedict Cumberbatch plays Van Gogh, which would nicely tie my day's watching into a freakily tidy package. (Were I to do so, I'd refuse to re-watch the TV movie where John Simm played Van Gogh, because then we'd be back to my thesis.)
