About a month ago, I had coffee with some friends and the conversation turned to buying clothes on eBay.

Ooh, I thought, this might be a way to buy a jacket. I have a raincoat, and a heavy winter coat, but no spring/fall jacket.

A month later I still don't have a jacket, but I am up nine dresses, two cardigans, three pairs of shoes, one purse, three books, three blazers, two skirt and a (modest) pile of things to take to a charity shop or offer to friends.

Luckily I've played with the new thing and can put it away now. I found some good stuff, some stuff that really didn't look like the picture (hence the charity shop donation), and got a fantastic deal on a 2009 London Mini A-Z so I can stop carrying around the 2008 Time Out London Shortlist. I'll probably use the same number of pages in each book, but there's a chance I might use the other pages in the A-Z whereas the Time Out is already outdated.

In other news, despite having a desktop computer (on a desk!) and an office on campus (also with a desk!) I've been sitting on my bed with my netbook, surrounded by stacks of printouts and books because, apparently, the best desk of all is a squishy purple one where I can safely flop backwards whenever my brain breaks.

ETA: On everybody's recommendation, I've been reading Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island. One of the first things he mentions is how British people can have endless conversations about motorways (which is one of the first things I noticed). But he also talks about Rupert Murdoch taking over UK newspapers (so timely), questions of royal succession (should Charles let William take over when the time comes?), and high street chains taking over from smaller retailers - all things that are just as relevant in 2011 as when the book was published 15 years ago.

ETA 2: While I think of it, the other thing I've been doing lately is watching ER with my flatmate. Sky Atlantic is airing the whole series, one episode a day, and my flatmate has been watching from the beginning. I didn't mean to start watching with her (I'd managed to never see an episode for the 15 years it was still on the air) but... I got sucked in.
