I never could get the hang of Thursdays
Nov. 17th, 2011 02:34 pmEvery so often I feel I need more creepy grimdark in my life, so I re-watch obsessive24/Nicky's Climbing Up the Walls.
And I forget that Zac Efron played flashback Simon in Firefly and there's a whole other level of intertextuality and creepiness that shows up.
Lessons learned: 1) when a prof asks me to explain "multifandom vidding" pick Metaphor as my example because it's easier to explain without several minutes of context, 2) don't eat while watching grimdark vids because you might choke on a cherry.*
*LOL symbolism?
Yesterday my BF and I screened a few things for our respective research. He brought a doc about DeMille's silent work and a silent Swedish adaptation of an Ibsen poem from 1917, and then we watched my DVD of Escapade vidshows greatest hits (1992-2001).
While I'm fairly but-not-really conversant in silent film, the BF feels the same way about popular culture. At one point he asked, in all innocence, "But what was the point of the Highlander TV series?". Heh. (The important thing is we both made notes on our own material...)

I like your BF. I mean, I've never met him, but based solely on the content of this post, he sounds like fun. *g*
The Zsc Efron thing always freaks me out when I'm reminded of it, too. To think, instead of going on to Highschool Musical, Efron *could* have become one of Whedon's stable, like Fillion. *brainsplosion*

And given the phrase "a silent Swedish adaptation of an Ibsen poem from 1917," I suspect I understand a bit about how your BF feels r: Highlander. I mean, I understand the words, and I understand the concept. But as art and entertainment, it's UTTERLY FOREIGN to me.

Date: 2011-11-19 04:17 pm (UTC)We were watching that 1917 film because we were checking to see if the soundtrack he'd added (replacing the "bad music" on his DVD) had rendered properly. Yup. (The silent era is interesting, but it's 30 years of film history that takes a lot of brain power to get your head around. Kind of like 50 years of organized media fandom...)
