Today I watched Source Code for teaching (tomorrow = final week of term!) and John Carter because my colleague won't shut up about how underrated and mis-marketed it is.
So.
I enjoyed both, but for different reasons and in different ways.
During Source Code I kept thinking: I like Jakey G more than The Gos because I'm not constantly worried about The Gos secretly being a serial killer. (Ides of March was a hard watch.) Also: Seven Days. Because: Seven Days. And, may I add: Seven Days. OMG U GUISE THEY MADE A MOVIE OF: Seven Days. And it was called Source Code.
I think I still like Moon better, but I've seen it more times.
Also: Vera Farmiga! <3
During John Carter I kept thinking: wow, all the ways the Star Wars prequels failed (wit, charm, good actors being directed competently, action sequences mostly always driving the plot, adorable alien animal sidekick...) are things John Carter does well. It feels very familiar (which makes sense, because I'm not sure where the Lucas/Spielberg perpetual retrofest would be without Edgar Rice Burroughs), but not like a cheap rip-off.
And, given the director - Andrew Standon - did WALL-E and Finding Nemo we have someone who understands that actors a) have faces and b) can use them to make expressions that c) can be used to convey character information (and also d) don't need to be rendered overnight). I'm looking at you, George Lucas.
Also: apparently, the Asylum mockbuster version of John Carter sounds like it uses a framing device like Source Code, so hooray!
...I shouldn't have watched John Carter because I need to keep Source Code fresh in my memory for seminars tomorrow.

Um, yes please? Your description on John Carter makes it sound much less crap than I (perhaps uncharitably?) assumed it would be. I probably won't have a chance to see it in a theatre, but that's definitely going on the to-see-at-some-point list!
