I'm back in the UK, all is well, but jet-lag never gets easier. (VividCon was lovely, but further reflection will wait probably until after it's relevant - for now, great conversations, interesting array of vids, lots of meeting new people and seeing friends, and quality time with con roommie [personal profile] serrico.)

Westward travel is easier to deal with because it's just staying up lots later and then sleeping in. This, I can handle. Eastward, though - ugh. Getting up five or six hours earlier is annoying, especially after being awake for 30+ hours and navigating multiple public transportation systems.

(I landed in Zurich yesterday morning at around 11am local time, after that I flew to Birmingham, took a train to Leam - waiting 56 minutes because I just missed the earlier departure - and then walked back to my flat. From there, I swapped around some luggage, tried to figure out bus routes into Coventry, had the figuring undercut by roads being closed for construction, couldn't find the exact address written down for where I was heading in Cov so wound down my phone battery texting friends for help, spent over two hours on local city buses watching for my stop while nodding off on a twistyest freaking milk run bus route, made it to my destination by 7pm, fed the fish and the cat and let the homeowner know my house-sitting has commenced. And that was after the overnight flight from Chicago.)

The other reason eastward travel can suck is because I'm coming back to daily life, not meeting up with friends and family. Since saying goodbye to [livejournal.com profile] amnisias at O'Hare, I think I've spoken maybe six sentences, and then only as a customer. My flatmate left for a week in Berlin a few hours before I got home this time, and then I had to scoot out to house-sit. Previous returns have been the same, with my former flatmate being out of town when I got back.

I think the next time I do this (in early October), I'll ask for company. Not because this is turning into a lonely-me pity-party, but because it's freaking weird to go so long without talking to anyone. Stopping for food and conversation will now be part of the travel routine.
