28 Days Later = tres amusant.

It's one of those crazy low-budget moves with no faces you'd recognize (unless, like me, you've seen Shallow Grave a few times) but the acting is good, the music is well-chosen, the visual style is different enough to be interesting (shot on DV! Yay DV!) and the ideas are better than I'd expected from a zombie movie.

Well, they're not undead, not in the sense that they died, they're just infected with... um... pure rage. Which is mentioned in the first 3 minutes of the movie and Never Mentioned Again. For the rest of the movie they're just Infected. Not undead, not really zombies in the traditional sense. Maybe in the voodoo sense, where they could stop being zombies if a 'cure' was found.

It's also really bleak. Really really really dark and bleak, but with some really beautiful, peaceful, happy parts.

Characteristics of a Danny Boyle Movie: Serious movie (about: apocalypse, heroin, deadly betrayal, violent kidnapping) that "emotionally delivers" whatever message it's trying to, *BUT* without being sentimental, overly dramatic yadda yadda. The payoff in the movie might be cliched and exactly what you'd expect/want to see, but there's something else that makes the entire thing completely offbeat. Or something. 28 Days Later is zombie/horror/thriller/survival that really gets insane and dark in the last 1/4. There's some scary shit going on. Megalomaniacal army commander. Proof that the winner of a philosophical arguement is the one with the bigger gun. Survival of the species in the event of the apocalypse. Etc.

ME LIKE!
