Reasons I love my father
Mar. 31st, 2004 01:37 pmnumber 583:
I get back from the video store and he asks me if I got anything.
"Yes," I say, handing him the 2 boxes.
"28 Days Later," he reads. "What's that about?"
"Zombies." He gets it on the 3rd time. Then he picks up the box for Once Upon a Time in
Mexico and reads a blurb-thing on the back.
"'Johnny Depp kicks it out of the park!'" he reads. "Johnny Depp. Now where have I heard that name... Oh, that's the guy on the poster that Sarah put in her locker." Note: for those who don't read the Zits cartoon, the character Sarah (not my brother's girlfriend) has, indeed, but a Johnny Depp poster in her locker. This is the length and breadth of my father's cultural awareness. "Johnny Depp," he continues. "So you know who that is?"
I admire my strength and my ability to be patient in spite of the sometimes astronomical
odds.
"Yes, Dad. He's been my favourite actor for the past five years. Where have you been?"
Him: "Really?"
"Yes Dad. I own 8 of his movies, have seen most of the rest he's done and have had two
posters of his and in my room for at least 3 years."
THIS IS NEWS TO HIM
He honestly had not noticed. My gabber is fully flasted. Three of my father's
children have high regard for this actor (I'm sure Jamie at least *knows* who he is) and DAD HASN'T A CLUE!
Granted, we are talking about a man who thinks it's cool that he can (sometimes) remember the names of all the Beatles. There's a cultural gap of, oh, 40 years. Gah.
[/emphasis overload]
LATER
Dad came into my room, looked at the poster of Edward Scissorhands and said That's him? He looks like Charlie Chaplin
yes dad
I thought you liked that Jack the Pirate guy
yes dad [find picture, hold up to compare] see? same guy, ten years apart...
takes a while, but he gets it.
