There is a show - currently airing and available at all your usual download sites - that's called Stephen Fry in America. It's no more or less than what it says on the tin: Stephen Fry, puttering around all 50 states, pointing at things and saying, "My, how American" in an astonished voice.

It's excellent.

He started in New England, and he's wending his way westward. He will, at some point, his California. Now. Since the first season of House, I've had fun with imagining all the different ways Stephen Fry could end up there. Preferably as House's old roommate, or a wacky cousin from England. And the character would be named Mike*. It would be a cameo. It would make no sense, but I would have fun watching it.
*From Mycroft. ^_^

...It will never happen. I know it won't happen, but it's a nice little wishing game.

However, with this Stephen Fry in America gig, there's a chance that, when Fry gets to California, he might swing by Los Angeles. Given that Fry's show is filmed for a British audience, would it not be entertaining if Hugh Laurie was to give his old pal Stephen Fry a tour of the set? Or teach him how to fake an American accent? Any way to get them in the same shot, is all I ask. Again, totally unlikely. But it would be fun, eh?

I keep seeing this around but have yet to actually watch it. Part of me is all "Examining my own culture through someone else's eyes! And also Stephen Fry!" But the other part of me is more along the lines of "This is going to be just like every other travel documentary EVER."

But now that I'm thinking about the House x-over potential? GOLDEN.

Hmm. Does it count as RPF if a certain intrepid American explorer happens to end up in a certain hospital to interact with occasionally and observe often a certain doctor?

'Cause my brain, she is a' going!

Do watch it: the first episode is New England, the second is the South. There is a hilarious bourbon-tasting party sequence that ends with a, "Little Stevie needs to go to bed now" and a *slumps out of frame*. It is moderately patronizing, but that's countered by Fry being fascinated with a relatively random sampling of Americana.

Plus, very few people know who the heck he is, which is amusing for us viewers.

It does smack of the generic travel documentary, but of all the people I'd watch just wandering around being interested in things, Stephen Fry is high on the list.

I don't think it's RPF if the explorer is a fictional character and the doctor is likewise fictional. Then it's JPF: Just Plain Fic.

It has been WAY too long. Laurie was on a whole one episode of QI? Argh!

It has, it so has. I find it intriguing that the character of House is being written about as a typically American character (defiantly individual, pop-culture obsessed, ruthless) and Fry's public image has become an embodiment of All Things British (or All Things British circa 1950). They both just used to do silly sketch comedy together and now they're both of them icons in different cultures. It's quite interesting, in fact.

Laurie barely said anything when he was on QI, though. So it almost doesn't count.
